For the mid-year gift giving season, Asahi decided to create three versions of their Dry Premium Houjou beer with different hop varieties. While all of them could be purchased in one gift box, tonight’s Karei-na Kaori could be found on conbini store shelves. This premium beer features Motueka hops from New Zealand. I believe this is the first Japanese beer from the Big Four to feature these hops, so it’ll be exciting to try for the first time.
In the glass, Karei-na Kaori has a beautiful deep golden color with a very floral aroma and hints of a candy-like sweetness. The first mouthful is very full but not over the top, and a fruity passion-like bitterness comes through mid to back. It has that clean Asahi dry finish, but the hops add an enjoyable bitterness on the end.
While Karei-na Kaori is a very good drinking beer, I feel it is a little one dimensional. In the process of giving it that clean flavor, I think it loses some of the malty depth and sweetness that would support the amount of bitterness that comes through. This beer is an interesting one, but at its high price point satisfaction will most likely be found elsewhere.
