Kirin Ichiban Shibori: Kumamoto-zukuri

Japanese Name: キリン 一番搾り熊本づくり 福岡工場限定醸造
Brewer: Kirin
Release: Oct. 2016
Type: Japanese Beer (ビール)
Alcohol: 5%

Tasting Notes:
In the glass, Kumamoto-zukuri has a deep golden color, quite different from the straw color of the standard Ichiban. Tons of malt comes through on the nose, transitioning into the first mouthful giving a rich, full flavor. Roasted malt with a hint of charcoal adds something different to the flavor profile. Its richness stays across the palate into the backend, ending with a good amount of hoppy bitterness.

With its deep rich flavor, Kumamoto-zukuri was really satisfying to drink. In comparison to the standard Ichiban, it was nice to have more depth and some roasted flavors coming through. And, I believe that with some of the proceeds going to Kumamoto’s earthquake relief effort, it makes it all the more worthwhile to drink.
