2017 brings about Asahi’s 30 year anniversary of the Super Dry brand, which changed the Japanese beer scene in 1987. Showing their mastery of fermentation techniques, Asahi has released Extra Hard under the Super Dry label.
Out of the can, Extra Hard pours out your standard light straw with an ever so slight citrus laced malt on the nose. The first gulp is very smooth with a lot more sweetness than the flagship Super Dry. In addition, it does have a decent amount of malt with the fruity tang of lemon peel. It finishes nice and clean as you would expect of the Super Dry brand.
Those Japanese with their branding, you’d never know what to expect with “Extra Hard” in the name. However, I do like the twist they have given to this beer. Granted, it is a subtle flavor change, but one that was nice to experience. The malt and citrus notes were a pleasant accompaniment to Asahi Super Dry’s easy drinking style.
