Again for the winter of 2016, Suntory has released Hatsu-Tsumami Hop Nouveau. Freshly picked Saaz fine aroma hops flown in from Czech, along with Diamond malt, and Suntory’s famed spring water were used in the production of this beer.
Hatsu-Tsumami pours a golden color in the glass and has a somewhat earthy aroma. The first gulp is full bodied and rich with quite a lot of sweetness on the mid-palate. It finishes with a delicate bitterness that builds over the coarse of the glass.
As far as a Japanese lager goes, Hatsu-Tsumami Hop Nouveau is really brewed well. Its body and malty flavor is top notch. However, the “nouveau” hop appeal just isn’t there for me. I don’t really detect the freshness and “green” hoppiness that I’ve come accustomed to in these new hop beers. It’s a delicious, solid beer no doubt, but I just wish there was a bit more.
