From Asahi’s new genre brand Clear Asahi this year is Hatsu-Tsumami no Zeitaku. This new genre brew uses “first harvested hops” from Yamagata Prefecture’s 2016 harvest along with aroma hops give its flavor.
Popping the top of Hatsu-Tsumami no Zeitaku gives of the pleasant aroma of fresh hops, bordering on crushed pine needles. It pours out with vibrant golden hue, with a head that dissipates quite quickly. The first gulp is very clean, actually there aren’t any flavors that really stand out. It glides across the tongue with quite a bit of effervescence (the reason there’s no head after a minute) and finishes with a nice bitterness.
To be honest, I feel that I might have to retry Hatsu-Tsumami no Zeitaku. Being later on my tasting flight this evening, I really wasn’t able to taste anything. There was a decent bitterness on the finish, but from front to back it was kind of like drinking club soda. At the moment, I’m disappointed.
