New to the Suntory Craft Select series this season is Wheat Ale. As the name states, it is made from wheat (and barley) malt and German aroma hops. Suntory’s late hopping method is supposed to impart a berry-like fruitiness to the beer.
Wheat Ale pours a straw gold into the glass with a very smooth hoppy aroma, and hints of yeast coming off the head. A lighter but flavorful first gulp awaits, staying round up front, then transitioning to an acidic tang towards the back of the mouth. There’s a rewarding bitterness that comes in on the mid-palate and continues down the throat.
I personally didn’t find the “fruitiness” that Suntory’s ales usually have. While I did enjoy the soft roundness of the wheat, the bitterness from the hops seemed a tad mediciny. I think that some people might enjoy this one however, so don’t hesitate to give it a try.
