The latest in the conbini limited releases is Sparkling Gold from Suntory’s The Premium Malt’s line. This all malt beer was released through the 7&i Holdings chains, such as 7-eleven and Ito Yokado and targeting people in their 20’s and 30’s. Along side The Premium Malt’s usual use of European aroma hops, Diamond malt, and spring water, they have incorporated malt from the Champagne region of France and Hallertau Blanc hops.
Sparkling Gold pours a deep straw color in the glass. A malty yet fruity aroma comes off the head, almost like sniffing the cork from a bottle of champagne. The first mouthful is very round and welcoming, and has a thick mouthfeel. Its flavors are quite light and refined, yet has a depth that cannot be found in other beers. The finish is viscous down the throat, with its maltiness being the main attraction. The bitterness while toned down builds up throughout the glass. Hints of citrus come through in the background.
Sparking Gold, while having an overall lighter flavor, has a depth to it that is quite amazing. This is a beer that needs to be appreciated slowly, and do make sure you buy a few cans. Truly a great beer!
