On tap at certain bars and restaurants, Asahi Premium Kohaku no Toki was released in 350 and 500mL cans exclusively to 7&i Holdings stores over the summer. This premium beer is Asahi’s Dunkel style beer, essentially a dark lager. Unfortunately, they’re long gone from conbini store shelves, so look for it on tap.
Kohaku no Toki pours a deep amber and has an aroma full of roasted malt, along with the sweetness of caramel. Its creamy head blends into the first gulp giving a light frothiness, while bringing a nice toasted malt flavor across the tongue. While its roasted flavors are quite strong, Kohaku no Toki has a lighter body than you might expect, finishing with just the right amount of bitterness.
Those looking for some darkness and the flavor that comes with it, might find some satisfaction in Kohaku no Toki. While a lot of new genres come onto the market some roasted malt, it is rare to find a “true Japanese beer” with roasted malt. Asahi Kohaku no Toki serves up a wonderful beer here, giving beer drinker in Japan an option for something more flavorful.
