Sapporo’s fourth iteration of its Belg series of new genre brews is Crystal Belg. This brew was crafted after the session style of Belgian beers known for their low alcohol content and light fruity flavors. Crystal Belg was created with top fermenting yeast and a combination of Cascade and Citra hops. This brew also received a three-star award from the International Taste & Quality Institute located in Brussels.
In the glass, Crystal Belg has a slightly golden tone. Its frothy head gives off a fragrant flowery-citrus aroma. The first gulp is very flavorful up front with citrus fruit, however the flavor immediately drops mid-palate, with a ton of bitterness kicking in on the back end. It finishes cleanly with no aftertaste.
Crystal Belg is one to be appreciated throughout the course of the glass. That non-existent mid-palate gap closes after a few sips being covered with a round bitterness and nice citrusy fruit. This new genre is an excellent beer for summer, very refreshing and tasty. If you can still find it, buy it!
