This spring’s limited release on the Grand Kirin label is named Urara Kaoru, a play on words meaning a bright, glorious fragrance. Urara Kaoru is a wheat ale that uses Bravo hops for a bright citrus flavor. All the Grand Kirin brews have been impressive, so I’m excited to see what this one has to offer.
This wheat beer has a wonderful golden hue in the glass. It is a very fragrant ale with notes of tropical fruit and aromatic spices. The first gulp is very flavorful right from the start, fruity and spicy. Notes of pineapple and cinnamon come to mind. It has a very rich thick mouth feel to complement its full bodied flavor. The finish is delicately sweet with a slight bitterness.
Urara Kaoru is a wonderfully fresh and flavorful beer that might appeal to the non-beer drinker reaching for a fruity cocktail. It’s a bit on the lighter side from a malty aspect, but is definitely big on flavor. This is another must try from the Grand Kirin line.
