Ichiban Sakura from Orion has been in production since 2009, released in November for consumption during Okinawa’s early hanami season. It is an all malt beer made with select aroma hops.
Ichiban Sakura pours out a nice gold in the glass. The first gulp is sharp up front, with malt coating the tongue going down the throat. It finishes with a good amount of bitterness leaving a fairly acidic after taste.
It’s always great to see an all malt beer from one of the Big Four, and it has been quite a while since I’ve sampled Ichiban Sakura. For a Japanese lager, it remains a good drinking beer. There’s nothing that really stands out or makes it excellent, but Ichiban Sakura is a straight-up no-nonsense beer you can throw back under the cherry blossoms.
