Asahi’s newest release for its Dry Premium brand is Hatsujikomi Dry Premium. This new beer is made mostly with Japanese ingredients harvested this past year: Golden Malt, hops, and “new” rice. Unfortunately, I missed last year’s release due to it having the same package design as the standard offering. This year’s package design features a royal blue color with an ichi-Fuji, ni-taka, san-nasubi motif in gold. A first dream about “Mt. Fuji, two hawks, and three eggplants” in the New Year is a sign of good fortune.
Hatsu-jikomi pours into the glass a deep golden color, bordering on orange. Rich malt permeates the air around the glass. Indeed, the first gulp has the same malty flavor and depth that screams, “beer!” The flavors of hop and malt cross the palate and finishes with a lovely bitterness.
Asahi stay true to its roots here with this Dry Premium. This year’s Hatsu-Jikomi is a down to earth Japanese lager that stays easy drinking with a decent amount of flavor and bitterness. Sure it’s a bit expensive, but Hatsu-Jikomi would make a nice beer to start off the New Year.
