Only sold in winter “oseibou” gift sets last year, Asahi decided to brew Kaori no Kohaku for limited release this year. It is made with eight varieties of hops this year and continues to use rye malt extract in addition to other adjuncts.
Kaori no Kohaku pours a dark brown, with a rich malty aroma coming off the head. The first gulp stars off nice and flavorful with an acidic bite. The hops hit the tip of the tongue with a bitterness that continues down the throat, while being on the fruity side with hints of berry and cassis on the mid-palate. It leaves the mouth with a light dry finish.
This years Kaori no Kohaku, is either brewed better or my tastes have changed. I’m hoping it is just brewed better. It has a lot of complexities that are not overwhelmed by the bitterness as was last year’s. I feel that it is more rounded and appealing to drink overall, yet Kaori no Kohaku is still not a beer that I can personally rate highly. I wish the flavors would carry more across the palate and have a fuller finish.
