For the first time this holiday season, Asahi has released a couple of Christmas Beers to grace the supermarket shelves. First on the menu tonight is Merry Gold. This beer features Japanese Golden malt and select hops added by hand. These beers from Asahi celebrate the traditional release of Christmas Beer in Denmark, and with this one’s 6.5% ABV, rosy cheeks and fun times are ensured.
Sweet spices and a fruity hoppy fragrance drift off the head as Merry Gold pours into the glass. It has a wonderfully deep orangish amber hue to it. The first gulp is very flavorful up front with tons of malt and a hoppy bitterness that kicks in on the backend. The middle however, tastes a bit watered down.
Merry Gold leaves a bit on the table I feel. It has a wonderful start and finish with just the right amount of tang and bitterness, but I would like to taste a little more on the mid-palate. The flavors just drop off and leave you wishing it would open up and develop more in the mouth.
