From Asahi’s flagship new genre brand, Clear Asahi, comes Hatsu-Tsumami no Kaori. This new genre brew is made with freshly harvested hops from Yamagata Prefecture, and uses a double hopping technique for its distinctly clean aftertaste.
In the glass, Hatsu-Tsumami is your standard straw color. A distinct musty odor comes immediately off the head, and as the foam dies down a more palatable tangy aroma shows itself. The first gulp is like a wave. First comes a blast of tangy fresh hop, immediately leaving, then a hoppy aroma pushes through as you breath out, while subtle hints of malt peak through in the throat.
Hatsu-Tsumami no Kaori doesn’t have any depth to speak of and is quite light even compared to other third tier offerings. As a new genre beer it does have the novelty of the fresh hops, but that wears off quite quickly. For those who do enjoy a light beer, this one will do the job, but for the rest of us who need something a little more satisfying, the search will continue.
