On a day searching for an elusive beer, I happened upon a 7-eleven carrying Ryukyu Pale Ale from Orion. Ryukyu is the old name for the Okinawan islands, and this new Orion Craft series is actually limited to Okinawa. For its first release, Ryukyu Pale Ale is an all malt RPA (IPA) style brew, featuring top-fermenting yeast yielding its fruitiness, along with Mandarina and Cascade hops, the former I’ve never heard of before. This series will be interesting to watch develop, I just hop we’ll get more in the Hokuriku region.
Ryukyu Pale Ale pours into the glass with a deep golden color, the fruity aroma from the yeast comes right to the nose. The hoppy richness hits the tip of the tongue and consumes the entire mouth. As it passes over the tongue and down the throat, its strong bitterness takes over and gives a nice finish.
This beer is very rich and full, and really gives you a mouthful of hops and malt to chew on. All this flavor, and yet, it remains very easy drinking which is very nice. If you’re into the stronger tasting beers, Ryukyu Pale Ale will definitely be up your alley.
