Kirin Ichiban Toretate Hop celebrates its 12th release with the 2015 vintage. This Japanese beer uses freshly harvested hops from Tono City in Iwate Prefecture. Combined with the Ichiban Shibori brewing method, Kirin creates a fresh tasting seasonal all malt beer.
Toretate Hop has a wonderful aroma that pours off the head, fresh with hops, green and citrusy. The first gulp starts fresh and flavorful, but the mid to back end is quite dull this year. A nice bitterness rounds off the backend adding a nice finishing touch.
As the Big Four brewers are experimenting with bolder flavors, Toretate Hop is starting to fall behind the pack. It starts of nice and has a wonderful nose, but Toretate Hop lacks punch, making it just an average beer. I’ve always enjoyed drinking this beer every year, but as of late, Toretate Hop has not been exciting me.
