Following this summer’s release of Gold Belg, Sapporo crafted a Belgian Brown Ale style brew in the new genre category with Brown Belg. This third tier brew uses Belgian malt, triple hopping (Apollo, Polaris, and Saaz Fine Aroma varieties), and top fermenting yeast to produce an ale style brew.
Brown Belg pours tan into the glass forming a nice frothy aromatic head, where the pungent hops stand out. In the first gulp you’ll discover a wonderful mouthful of flavor starting with some roasted malt. Slight hints of citrus start off the bitterness midway, really kicking in as the beer goes down the throat. The finish is sharp leaving remnants of char and citrus rind tempting the second gulp.
As far as third tier brews go, Sapporo’s Brown Belg is pretty much as close to a Japanese beer as you’ll find. It does well in showing off a nice malty depth and really pours on the bitterness. Granted, Brown Belg is a bit more expensive than the usual new genre brews the price difference is really worth it.
