Asahi’s limited winter new genre release is called Fuyu no Kampai, just in time for all those nabe (hot-pot) parties the Japanese love to have. This brew sports Cascade and Citra hops for a lively spicy aroma and flavor.
Colored deep gold in the glass, Fuyu no Kampai has a slightly tangy aroma with hints of malt. Up front its quite rich and flavorful with a good amount of sweetness, translating into a full bodied brew. It’s got some hints of malt, but overall is quite mediciny. The backend finishes clean, without a lot of bitterness.
For a brew that’s priced around a less than 100 yen before taxes, it’s not bad. I like the full bodied flavor, but the middle just doesn’t do it for me. However, the finish is very nice and makes Fuyu no Kampai a decent brew. If you’re partying and it’s winter, I’m sure you won’t mind chugging a few of these.
