Kirin Hareyakana Beer

Japanese Name: キリン 晴れやかなビール
Brewer: Kirin
Release: Oct. 13, 2015
Type: Japanese Beer (ビール)
Alcohol: 5%
Purchase Price: ¥203 @Aeon

Tasting Notes:
Following in the footsteps of Asahi’s The Royal Label, Kirin has also decided to enter the low carb beer scene with Hareyakana Beer. This all malt beer was made in cooperation with the Aeon Group and was first distributed through their stores. Hareyakana Beer is made with Japanese malt and partly uses hops from Iwate Prefecture. Being a diet beer, it has 50% less carbs than traditional beers.

Hareyakana pours out a lovely deep gold in the glass, and possesses an unmistakable malty aroma that screams “beer!” The first gulp is a different story, however. Its flavor is quite sweet, with the front end being devoid of anything resembling beer. The mid-palate is a bit mediciney, making its overall taste akin to a new genre brew, with some added bitterness on the back end.

It’s been quite a while since I haven’t really had anything decent to write about a brew. Aside from the malty aroma, Hareyakana Beer is just not up to par. You get smacked with the “all malt” beer price, but nothing to back up the price. This one is pure disappointment in a glass.

Kudos for being diligent. I never bother with ‘lite’ ‘light’ ‘diet’ beers.
