Here come the first of the winter new genre brews. Suntory’s Kinmugi Kohaku no Kutsurogi was first released last year to positive reviews, so they’ve decided to release it again for 2015. Let’s check it out!
This year’s Kohaku no Kutsurogi seems to pour our a little darker in color than last year’s. It’s a very rusty amber shade with a nice malty full-bodied aroma coming off the head. The first gulp is very flavorful and long lasting with roasted malt staying until the very end. Its bitterness comes through right up front as well and is carried across the tongue right down the throat. The finish is ever so slightly on the sweet side, but remains clean.
For the new genre ambers on the market at the moment, this one is definitely one of the better ones. Comparing my notes from last year, I think 2015’s has a much fuller body and more concentrated flavors. It just might give some of the true Japanese beers a run for their money.
