2015 marks the third year Sapporo has brewed their Mugi to Hop Aka fall limited production brew. I’ve always looked forward to this one, and would buy it in bulk instead of the standard Mugi to Hop when it came to market. This year’s was labeled “Special” and for good reason. For the first time, they’ve brewed Aka with top-fermenting yeast making it a new genre ale! In addition, they’ve used rich golden malt and golden aroma hops to create a low-malt brew that possesses a rich aroma and has depth of flavor.
Aka Special does pour out a deep burn rouge, accompanied by a very malty nose. The first gulp shows off its roasted flavors from the start. It’s very dry and clean tasting mid-palate, and stays that way to the finish when the bitterness kicks in tightening the throat and puckering the back of the cheeks.
For a new genre, Aka Special is pretty darn good. It’s got that roasted malt flavor that’s all the rage this fall, but keeps the sweetness on the down-low which keeps me wanting a second can. Being that Mugi to Hop The Gold is my daily drinker I’m a little biased, but this fall I wouldn’t mind drinking this every night.
