Suntory’s fall release for their The Premium Malt’s line is Houjun Ale, which means mellow ale. On Suntory’s website, little information is given about this beer other than it’s going to be a fruity mellow ale. Here goes!
True to its advertising, the fruitiness from the hops really comes through on the nose. Houjun Ale has a very creamy full mouthfeel, and a very mild refreshing flavor that keeps all aspects toned down. Although, this ale has a very heavy aroma, its flavor is a little fruity, a little sweet, a little malty, and a little bitter on the finish. It’s really a well rounded ale that doesn’t overpower your tastebuds.
As I go through this glass of Houjun Ale, I’m really liking its drinkability. It’s got just the right amount of all the different flavor components you’d be looking for in an ale, and with its “mellowness” I could drink this one all day. Although I’ve just started on this year’s fall brews, Suntory Houjun Ale holds the Pole Position.
