Celebrating 10 years since the creation of the Kohaku Yebisu line, Sapporo has released Crystal Amber for this autumn season. As the name states, this Japanese beer uses Crystal malt which is a type of caramel malt bringing its special color and flavor to the table. Kohaku Yebisu has always been one of my favorite beers, so I’ve chosen this to start off the fall line-up.
As one would expect, Crystal Amber pours out dark into the glass. The nose has a distinct caramel laced malty aroma. Up front is a roasted charcoal-like flavor. The body starts off quite mellow, until the hops kick in on the mid to back bringing a hefty bitterness to the throat.
The interesting part of Crystal Amber is that is starts off quite light, just showing off hints of roasted malt and bitterness. However, as common with Yebisu beers, the bitterness sticks around building with each gulp and compounding the flavors throughout the glass turning into a full bodied beer. You’ll want to sit back and nurse this baby slowly and really enjoy what it has to offer.
