For the fifth release of Suntory’s Craftsman’s Beer series for the Aeon Group, Suntory has chosen to stick with Germany again brewing up a Dunkel. Seirei no Kohaku is made in part with dark malt which enhances the malty notes Dunkels are known for. The German hops in combination with late hopping are said to provide a clean aftertaste.
This beer pours out a deep dark amber in the glass. Lightly roasted malt starts off the drink, showing off its medium body. A little tang kicks in starting on the mid-palate. The finish sports more malt and has a coffee-like bitterness with an ever-so-slight sweetness.
Seirei no Kohaku is obviously a very different beer compared to your average Japanese beers. In comparison to the previous Craftsman’s Beer release, this one does not have the fruitiness, and is more on the malty side. And having a longer, rounder flavor I do find it more enjoyable than the previous Altbier.
