Only available in summer gift sets
Once again, Japan’s summer gift giving season lead Asahi to release a new beer in its Dry Premium line. Wa no Zeitaku shows itself off in an absolutely gorgeous blue package, with golden morning glory flowers and Japanese garden scene. A subtle wave pattern adds a nice touch to the blue. Wa no Zeitaku uses Japanese ingredients like Golden malt for a rich flavor. We’ll see if the PR stays true to word.
Wa no Zeitaku pours out a lovely golden straw in the glass, your standard Japanese lager fare. It has a very malty nose stemming from the use of the Japanese grown Golden malt. Again, malt forms the majority of the start of the first gulp, then the hops kick in mid-palate, finally ending with a sharp bitterness and tang that tinges the lips. There’s a subtle sweetness in the background though, somewhat citrusy like
a mikan orange grapefruit. It’s got a lot of flavor through and through, letting you know it’s not your every day brew.
In the Dry Premium line, Wa no Zeitaku is one of the better releases. For a summer beer, I like that it’s easy drinking and stays on the lighter side, while packing a flavorful punch. There’s more malt and hops than the standard lineup of Japanese beer, yet it keeps things inline with tastes here. Wa no Zeitaku is different, yet stays familiar to the Japanese palate.
