Sapporo’s newest release in its new genre Belgium line is Gold Belg. This third tier brew shoots for a standard lager, unlike its predecessor Sapporo White Belg. As the name implies Gold Belg uses Belgian malt and clocks in at a higher than usual six-percent ABV.
Poured into the glass, Gold Belg starts of with some decent malt flavor and is somewhat hearty. However, all that flavor just drops off mid-palate, making you reach for another gulp. Luckily, a decent amount of bitterness kicks in on the backend. This brew has some sweetness and is a little richer than the majority of the new genres.
To sum things up, Sapporo Gold Belg is above average in the new genre category. While the start and finish are wonderful, that middle transition is its Achilles heel.
