You can’t miss its package design on the store shelves. Graced in royal blue with golden lettering is the newest limited production brew from the Mugi to Hop line, The Gold Kaoru Koku. Slated as a “summer” release, Kaoru Koku features the use of rich golden malt and golden aroma hops, as well as Golden Star hops from Tono.
Sapporo’s Kaoru Kaku pours a nice creamy head. Its quite pale in the glass, but has a wonderfully fresh hoppy fragrance. The first gulp is very rich and full in the front of the mouth, slowly dissipating across the palate, replaced by a refined bitterness down the throat, leaving a gentle tang on the tongue.
From a price standpoint, Kaoru Koku is at the top of the heap. It’s got a great flavor profile, that is almost on par with a true Japanese beer. While the deep maltiness is not quite there, the bitterness of the hops combined with just the right amount of sweetness makes for a rich, satisfying brew.
