Following up on its release of Lime Black, Asahi chose to pair its Dry Black beer with orange entitled Dry Black Bar Style Orange. Let’s see if I can hang with the younger crowd Asahi is targeting with Bar Style Orange.
This black lager is indeed black in the glass with a strong orange aroma permeating the air. Your first gulp with be very citrusy sweet, while a piney bitterness coats the lips and tongue. It’s the bitterness from the hops that shows up in the throat, thank goodness. The finish is clean with with a slight sweetness from the orange hanging around.
Although this was an interesting cocktail idea, I have to say I do prefer the Black Lime. Bar Style Orange was a bit sweet for my tastes, although I could see the appeal to the non-beer drinker. Given that Dry Black to begin with is somewhat lacking in flavor, what ever it is mixed with will pretty much dominate the drink. If Asahi does decide to continue the series I hope they will tone down the sweetness. Maybe something herbal would work, cloves perhaps? Rose water? In any case, if you do try Bar Style Orange, I would suggest following Asahi’s advice and drink it over the rocks with a garnish of orange and mint. Cheers!
