Here’s another limited new genre brew for Lawson convenience stores, Suntory Sweet Rich. As the label states, you can enjoy the aroma of roasted sugar, although it’s actually not sugar, but a chemical concoction. I didn’t have any test tubes on hand, so I had to pour it into my usual glass.
Pouring it out into the glass and taking my first gulp, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The first thing that came across was a strong metallic aroma/taste in the foam, not very pleasant. After the head fizzled away, I was left with a slightly sweet carbonated beverage. It didn’t really taste like beer, more like a club soda with some dissolved brown sugar.
Non-beer drinkers who are apt to reach for a chuhai might venture out to try this one. Otherwise, you lovers of Japanese brews would be better off spending your hard earned yen on something with a little more kick. Sorry Suntory Sweet Rich, it’s a good thing your days in the Lawson beverage cooler are numbered.
