Rounding out the Asahi x Conbini limited brews is Asahi Bitter Premium created for the FamilyMart chain. Bitter Premium was distributed across Japan and even Taiwan this summer from mid-June, though it took me over a month of searching to find a FamilyMart that carried it in my area. Here we go!
Poured into the glass, you’ll notice a darker color. It’s a deeper gold tone than your average Japanese lager. My first gulp encountered a nice amount of effervescence carrying flavors of malt and hop to the tip of my tongue. The bitterness kicks in mid-palate and continues down the throat, leaving you with a slightly bitter finish and a smooth mouth feel.
Reading through the press release, Asahi Bitter Premium is targeting 50+ generation, those folks who remember what real beer tasted like before the dry wars (not actually written). Asahi Bitter Premium is a straight forward beer, well made with a balance of flavor that a lot of beer drinkers the world over would appreciate. It’s not overly hopped, it doesn’t have too much bitterness, and is a beer you’d say… “barkeep, I’d like another,” or rather, “excuse me FamilyMart dude, point me to your beer cooler.” So head down to your local FamilyMart and try Asahi Bitter Premium while they’re on the shelves.
