Sitting at the back of my refrigerator was this lonely can of Sapporo Chocolat Brewery Bitter purchased back in March. I was in the mood for something a little sweet, so this one is finally getting opened about 7 months after the sweet version. Better late than never.
Out of the can, Chocolat Brewery is dark like a porter or one of the Japanese black lagers. You can smell the chocolate on the nose, but it is not as pronounced as the sweet variety. Taking a gulp, it tastes of dark beer; you get the maltiness, with a touch of chocolate at the end.
In contrast with the sweet version, Sapporo Chocolat Brewery Bitter is not necessarily a “dessert” beer. It does have the sweetness some may like to finish off the evening, but it still leaves space for whatever dessert appeals to your palate, maybe a side of vanilla ice-cream would provide a pleasing contrast. While this new-genre beverage is currently off the market, I’d expect Sapporo and Royce to put this back on the shelves this winter, perhaps with a new twist.
