Pouring this winter brew from Sapporo, I immediately noticed the deep golden color, hinting at amber, but not quite. On my first gulp, the flavors were apparent, this was not your average lager. As expected of a winter brew, it has heartiness, and is well rounded without being overbearing. Apparently, these flavors are imparted from the process of roasting the malt over charcoal fire, a first in Japan. The roasted malt gives the deep color and full bodied taste. This beer will leave you content whether you’re eating a hearty winter stew or yakitori.
Continuing a 21 year tradition, the 2010-2011 Sapporo Fuyu Monogatari did not disappoint. This one will surely find its way into my shopping basket this winter season.
